What happened on the Sea of Galilee
Jesus and His disciples were crossing the sea when a great storm arose. Waves entered the ship while Jesus slept in the stern. Fearing that they would perish, the disciples woke Him.
Jesus arose, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still.” Mark records that the wind ceased and there was a great calm. The sudden calm answers the violence of the storm.
Why Jesus questioned the disciples
After calming the sea, Jesus asked why the disciples were so fearful and how they had no faith. His question does not deny that the storm was dangerous. It exposes their failure to trust Him while He was present with them.
The disciples then ask what manner of man He is, since even the wind and sea obey Him. The miracle reveals more than help in a crisis: it reveals Christ’s extraordinary authority.
Does the verse promise a trouble-free life?
The passage does not promise that believers will avoid every storm or that every difficulty will end immediately. It calls attention to the identity and authority of Christ. The disciples’ security rested not in calm circumstances but in the One who was with them.
