Jacob Was 130 When He Entered Egypt

Jacob was 130 years old when he entered the land of Egypt. Genesis 47:9 records his own words to Pharaoh: “The days of the years of my pilgrimage are an hundred and thirty years.”

After Joseph revealed himself and sent for his father, Jacob and his household went down into Egypt. Joseph presented his father to Pharaoh, and Pharaoh asked Jacob his age.

Jacob answered that the days of the years of his pilgrimage were a hundred and thirty years, describing them as few and evil compared with the years of his fathers. The number 130 is therefore not an inference; it is Jacob’s own testimony.

What else happens at this point

Joseph was about thirty-nine years old when the family arrived, two years into the famine. Jacob lived seventeen more years in Egypt and died at 147. The migration also frames the “seventy souls” who came into Egypt with Jacob.
