How Old Was Joseph When He Became Prime Minister of Egypt?

Joseph was 30 years old when he stood before Pharaoh and was appointed over the land of Egypt. Genesis 41:46 states his age directly.

Joseph was thirty years old

After interpreting Pharaoh’s dreams, Joseph advised Pharaoh to appoint a wise man to prepare Egypt for seven years of famine. Pharaoh recognized that the Spirit of God was in Joseph, gave him authority over his house and people, and placed him over the land.

Genesis 41:46 then says that Joseph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh. Joseph went throughout Egypt and began administering the collection of food during the seven plentiful years.

Was Joseph literally called prime minister?

The KJV does not use the modern title “prime minister.” Pharaoh made Joseph ruler over his house and over all Egypt, while reserving only the throne above him. “Prime minister” is a convenient modern description of Joseph’s position as Pharaoh’s chief administrator and second-in-command.

Joseph also received Pharaoh’s ring, fine linen, a gold chain, an Egyptian name, and public honour. These details demonstrate that his authority was governmental and nationwide.

Joseph’s age during the famine

The seven years of plenty began after Joseph’s promotion at age thirty, so he was about thirty-seven when the famine began. When Joseph revealed himself to his brothers, two years of famine had passed. He was therefore about thirty-nine when Jacob entered Egypt.

Jacob told Pharaoh that he was 130 years old at that time. The difference between Jacob’s age and Joseph’s age provides an important anchor for reconstructing their family timeline.
